ทำงานนิตยสารมาเนิ่นนานถึงสิบกว่าปีเข้าไปแล้ว ย่อมมีเรื่องประทับใจหลายเรื่องด้วยกัน โดยเฉพาะการมีโอกาสได้สนทนากับเหล่านักสร้างสรรค์ที่มีพลังงานเหลือล้น มีส่วนช่วยเติมไฟในตัวเราให้ลุกโชนขึ้นมาทุกครั้งไป จำได้ว่าตอนที่ Marc Newson เล่าถึงสมัยที่เขาเพิ่งเริ่มต้นทำงานออกแบบ ต้องตัดสินใจว่าจะเติมน้ำมันรถหรือจะกำเงินไว้หาอะไรลงท้องสักหน่อยดี ทำให้เราแทบจะไม่เชื่อว่าคนอย่างเขาจะเคยมีวันเวลายากลำบากมาก่อนเช่นกัน Karim Rashid บ่นถึงความยากลำบากอีกรูปแบบหนึ่งอันเกิดจากสไตล์การแต่งตัวและบุคลิกของเขา ทำให้ตกเป็นผู้ต้องสงสัยว่าเป็นมาเฟียหรือพ่อค้ายาเสพติดแบบในหนังอยู่บ่อยๆ Erwan Bouroullec เคยเล่าเกี่ยวกับความสัมพันธ์กับ Ronan พี่ชายของเขาซึ่งอธิบายถึงวิธีคิดและสร้างสรรค์งานออกแบบของพี่น้องคู่นี้ได้เป็นอย่างดี
ต้องขอบคุณ Gary Hustwit ผู้กำกับภาพยนตร์เรื่อง ‘Objectified’ ที่ช่วยดึงเอาความรู้สึกดีๆแบบนี้กลับมาอีกครั้งตลอดเวลา 76 นาทีของการนั่งชมหนังเรื่องล่าสุดเรื่องนี้ของเขา เมื่อวันที่ 15 ตุลาคมที่ผ่านมา Objectified มีจุดเด่นอยู่ตรงดาราแสดงนำ หรือจะเรียกให้ถูก ก็ต้องเป็นบรรดาผู้ให้สัมภาษณ์ทั้งหลาย ซึ่งเป็นผู้มีบทบาทสำคัญในวงการออกแบบผลิตภัณฑ์ของโลกในปัจจุบันทั้งสิ้น ความรู้สึกในการชมภาพยนตร์เรื่องนี้เหมือนกับดูหนังรักดีๆสักเรื่องหนึ่ง เพียงแต่แกนเรื่องเน้นไปที่ความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างคนกับสิ่งของ มิใช่ความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างหญิง-ชาย ผู้ชมจึงได้อิ่มเอมไปกับความสัมพันธ์ระหว่าง Jonathan Ive กับ Apple laptop ตัวใหม่ของเขา Dieter Rams กับประโยคทอง “Good design is as little design as possible” Naoto Fukasawa กับความทรงจำในวัยเยาว์ Karim Rashid กับคำพูดกระตุ้นความฮึกเหิม พี่น้อง Bouroullec กับแรงบันดาลใจชั้นเยี่ยม แถมมิวายพาดพิงไปถึงดีไซเนอร์ชาวออสเตรเลีย… ภาพตัดไปเป็น Marc Newson โผล่มาพอดี และแน่นอนเราได้รับรู้ถึงความฝันเกี่ยวกับการท่องอวกาศของเขา… อีกครั้ง
ฉากโรแมนติกของ Objectified นอกจากจะวนเวียนอยู่กับผู้ออกแบบและผู้ใช้แล้ว ยังผูก โยงไปหาประเด็นทางสังคมเกี่ยวกับการนำวัสดุที่ใช้แล้วกลับมาใช้ใหม่ รวมทั้งประเด็นเกี่ยวกับความยั่งยืนของภาคอุตสาหกรรม คำถามก้อนโตที่ทุกคนเกี่ยวข้องต้องแบกรับเอากลับไปขบคิดกันต่อ
หนังจบแล้ว… ชีวิตยังดำเนินต่อไป ความอิ่มอกอิ่มใจที่ได้ในวันนี้กำลังจะแปลงไปเป็นพลังงานอย่างใดอย่างหนึ่งในอนาคต เราลุกขึ้นจากที่นั่งพร้อมๆกับเพื่อนๆวีไอพีคนอื่นๆ ที่กระจายตัวอยู่ตามขั้นบันไดและพื้นโรงหนัง ปัดฝุ่นที่ก้นเล็กน้อย พลันครุ่นคิดถึงกล้องถ่ายรูปรุ่นใหม่ 2 ยี่ห้อ ยังคิดไม่ตกว่าจะเลือกตัวไหนดี…
จากบทบรรณาธิการ ฉบับที่ 164
Having worked in the magazine business for more than ten years I have gathered a number of impressions over the years. Having opportu-nities to talk with some iconic designers has always been one good source to set on fire. I recall a conversation with Marc Newson who mentioned his early stages in the design profession, during which he had to decide whether he should use his modest funds to fill gas in his car or get something to eat. Karim Rashid complained that most of the time, his unique character and costume made people suspect him to be part of some Italian mafia gang or a drug dealer. Erwan Bouroullec told us about his relationship with his brother Ronan, which really explained their approach towards creative thinking.
And, I wish to thank Gary Hustwit, director of ‘Objectified’, who managed to bring back the good feelings back as I was watching his 76-minute documentary when it was screened on October 15th. ’Objectified’ is remarkable for its cast featuring some of the most influential designers of our time. Watching this film is like watching a love story, but this one is of a relationship between human beings and objects, not between a man and woman. Viewers can enjoy the romance of Jonathan Ive and his new Apple laptop, Dieter Rams and his golden line - “Good design is as little design as possible”, Naoto Fukasawa and his childhood memory, Karim Rashid and his provocations, The Bouroullecs and their best inspirations as well as their unintentional gibe to an Australian designer, and then cut to Marc Newson who tells his dream of space travel, once again.
The romantic scenes of ‘Objectified’ also connect to critical topics, like reusing materials and sustainability of the whole industry, which is a big issue that each one of us has to keep in mind.
The movie ended… but life goes on. We believe that the energy here can be transformed into some creations in the future. As my friends and I stood up from the V.I.P. (floor) seats and busted the dust just a little, I couldn’t help but think about two of the newest models of digital cameras available in the market - can’t decide which one should I buy… []
